I don’t know about you, but I’ve been feeling pretty drained lately. It’s hardly surprising though, after the year we’ve had.
This led me to read an interesting article on surge capacity: the idea is that we’ve all been operating on a higher level for months, surviving on adrenalin and dealing with constant change and uncertainty. But you can only do that for so long before you become exhausted.
It’s something that is familiar to people who are used to operating in intense situations, working in disaster zones or with the emergency services. You can only dig that bit deeper for so long before there’s nothing left.
If I’m honest, I probably haven’t been looking after myself properly, working too much and allowing my stress levels to get a bit high. With the weather changing and the nights growing longer, it seems the perfect time to focus on rest and replenishment instead. Read that pile of books, rack up another series on Netflix, listen to a new album.
This year has been long and painful and full of unexpected changes, and it doesn’t look like things are going to get better any time soon. So if you can, invest in your mental health, rest, look after yourself and take the time to enjoy the little things.
